P&M is an injection-molding manufacturer of automotive custom parts for OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers. Our automotive custom parts cover glass-filled nylon brackets, connectors, and EV housings, backed by IATF 16949 quality, tight tolerances, and fast tooling. Request an automotive custom parts quote.
P&M is an injection-molding manufacturer that also machines custom cnc parts for the same programs it molds. Both capabilities sit under one roof, which matters more than it sounds: the mold inserts, cores, slides, and fixtures that make a plastic part successful are themselves custom cnc parts, and the pilot brackets, test rigs, and low-volume metal components that surround a launch are usually custom cnc parts too.
Our machining department runs 3-axis and 5-axis vertical machining centers, multi-axis turning centers, wire and sinker EDM, and surface grinders. We cut aluminum, stainless steel, tool steel, brass, copper, titanium, and engineering plastics such as POM, PEEK, PTFE, and PC. Prototype quantities of one to fifty pieces are routine, and we scale to several thousand machined pieces per year for customers who need a machined part to stay machined.
Because we mold as well, we advise honestly on process choice. If a geometry can be injection molded at volume, we say so and quote the tool. If a program needs 200 pieces, an undercut that no mold can release, or a metal part that must survive heat and load, machining is the correct answer, and we deliver custom cnc parts that hold tolerance from the first article to the last shipment.
Every custom cnc parts order starts with a drawing review: datum strategy, tolerance stack, surface finish callouts, and material availability. We flag anything that will drive cost without adding function, then quote a firm price and a firm lead time. Send a STEP file and we will return a manufacturability review, a tolerance assessment, and a quotation.
Subtractive manufacturing is the oldest and still the most flexible way to turn a digital model into a physical part. CNC machining removes material from a solid block or bar with controlled motion and controlled force, which means the final geometry depends on machine accuracy, tool condition, fixturing stiffness, and cutting parameters rather than on a mold cavity. That is why custom cnc parts dominate prototypes, bridge tooling, low-to-mid volume production, and any application where strength, heat resistance, or dimensional stability rules out plastics formed at high temperature.
P&M introduces every custom cnc parts program through four gates.
Gate 1 - Function and quantity. We confirm what the part must do, how many pieces are needed per year, and whether the design is frozen. A 50-piece fixture plate and a 5,000-piece production bracket are different manufacturing problems even when the drawing looks identical. Quantity also decides whether machining should be the permanent process or a bridge to molding.
Gate 2 - Material selection. Aluminum 6061 and 7075 give the best strength-to-weight ratio and machine quickly. Stainless 303 and 304 offer corrosion resistance and cleanable surfaces. Tool steels (P20, H13, S136) are selected when the custom cnc parts will become mold inserts that see millions of cycles. Engineering plastics are chosen for electrical insulation, chemical resistance, or low friction, with mold shrinkage and thermal expansion factored into the nominal dimensions.
Gate 3 - Process routing. We choose the shortest route that holds the tolerance: 3-axis milling for prismatic parts, 5-axis for contoured and multi-face geometry, turning with live tooling for round parts with cross features, EDM for sharp internal corners and hardened steel, and grinding where surface finish or flatness is critical. Fixture design is planned before the first cut, because workholding stiffness controls chatter and, ultimately, the size of the tolerance band we can promise.
Gate 4 - Validation. First-article inspection on a coordinate measuring machine, in-process checks at defined intervals, and full dimensional reports with material certificates. Critical-to-function dimensions receive capability studies before we commit to repeat production.
That sequence keeps custom cnc parts predictable, whether the deliverable is a single fixture or a production run of machined housings.

custom cnc parts from P&M carry a consistent set of engineering features that determine where they perform best and what they cost.
Feature: tight, repeatable tolerances. We hold +/-0.01 mm on critical dimensions of small precision parts and +/-0.05 mm on general machined features, with tighter bands available on ground surfaces. Because we inspect against the drawing datum scheme, the tolerance you specify is the tolerance you receive, not a best-case number from the quote stage.
Feature: material breadth. One supplier covering aluminum, stainless, carbon steel, tool steel, brass, copper, titanium, and engineering plastics removes the coordination cost of splitting a project across three vendors. It also shortens lead time, because material is purchased and staged against a single production plan.
Feature: surface finish control. Achievable finishes range from as-machined Ra 3.2 down to Ra 0.4 on ground surfaces. Anodizing, hard anodizing, zinc plating, nickel plating, passivation, bead blasting, and laser marking are managed with qualified finishing partners and verified on the inspection report.
Feature: complex geometry. 5-axis simultaneous machining and EDM release undercuts, deep pockets, thin walls, and organic contours that would require multiple setups or a split design on conventional equipment. Fewer setups mean better position tolerance between features and less risk of handling damage.
Feature: genuine low-volume economics. No tooling cost, no minimum order quantity, and no waiting for a mold. Prototype-to-production continuity is often the deciding factor when a program cannot tolerate a design change between sample and series.
Feature: tooling and fixture integration. Because P&M molds as well as machines, we produce mold inserts, cores, slides, lifters, and gauges as custom cnc parts, then validate them in our own presses. The feedback loop between machining and molding is short and direct.
Typical applications include:
- Industrial automation: end-effector plates, gripper jaws, sensor brackets, and conveyor guide rails.
- Medical equipment: instrument housings, surgical guides, manifold blocks, and sterilization trays.
- Automotive and EV: battery pack spacers, busbar supports, test fixtures, and prototype powertrain components.
- Electronics and telecom: heat sinks, RF shielding frames, connector bodies, and test sockets.
- Mold and die shops: cavity inserts, cores, slides, electrodes, and precision fixtures.
- Food and packaging machinery: stainless filler nozzles, star wheels, change parts, and guide assemblies.
- Aerospace and defense suppliers: lightweight structural brackets and ground-support tooling.
Each application carries its own documentation, traceability, and finish requirement, so every custom cnc parts project is quoted and inspected against its own specification rather than a generic catalog standard.
## Materials, Processes, And Cost Drivers For custom cnc parts
Cost in CNC machining is driven by material, cycle time, and setup count, in that order. A part machined from aluminum 6061 can cost a third of the same part cut from titanium, not because the material price is three times higher but because cutting speeds, tool wear, and cycle time change completely.
Process routing follows geometry. Prismatic plates with holes and pockets run on 3-axis machines with multiple parts per fixture to amortize setup. Parts with angled faces, deep cavities, or five exposed sides move to 5-axis, which eliminates re-fixturing and improves feature-to-feature position. Turned parts with milled flats or cross-drilled holes run on live-tool lathes. Sharp internal corners, narrow slots, and hardened tool steel go to EDM. Flatness, parallelism, and mirror finish requirements go to grinding.
Design choices that reduce cost without reducing function: relax tolerances on non-functional surfaces, avoid deep pockets narrower than four times the tool diameter, keep wall thickness uniform, specify standard drill and tap sizes, and combine features so they can be reached from one direction. We review every drawing against these rules and tell customers where a small change saves real money, which is why our quotations frequently come in below expectations on well-designed custom cnc parts.
Prototype paths include machined parts delivered in three to five working days for simple geometry, and bridge production from machined pieces while a mold is being built. That bridge is often what keeps a product launch on schedule.
## Tolerances, Inspection, And Quality Control For custom cnc parts
A machined part is only as good as the evidence behind it. Every batch of custom cnc parts leaves our floor with dimensional data that a customer can audit.
Incoming material is verified against mill certificates for grade, heat number, and condition. Cutting tools are tracked by life count, so a worn tool is replaced before it moves a dimension outside its band. In-process inspection uses calibrated micrometers, bore gauges, height gauges, and optical comparators, with frequency defined by the tolerance class of each feature. Final inspection on a coordinate measuring machine produces a dimensional layout against the drawing, including position, profile, and flatness where specified.
Capability studies are run on critical-to-function dimensions before volume release. Our target is a Cpk of 1.33 minimum on production features and 1.67 on safety-related characteristics. Where a customer requires it, we supply first-article inspection reports, material and finish certificates, PPAP documentation levels 1 through 5, RoHS and REACH declarations, and full lot traceability from material heat number to shipped carton.
Our quality management follows ISO 9001, with ISO 13485 alignment for medical programs and IATF 16949 alignment for automotive programs. Cleanroom packing, protective masking, and serialized laser marking are available for parts that require them.
## Why OEM Teams Choose P&M For custom cnc parts
Three things separate a dependable machining supplier from a frustrating one: the accuracy of the first part, the honesty of the lead time, and the consistency of the part shipped two years later.
P&M engineers the process before quoting. Fixture design, tool list, and inspection plan are settled in the same review that produces the price, so a firm quotation also means a firm schedule. Typical lead time for new custom cnc parts is five to ten working days depending on complexity and material, with expedited options for design emergencies. Repeat orders run against a frozen process, and we requalify annually to keep long-running programs stable.
We also handle the details that stall projects: material substitution proposals when a mill lead time slips, finish and anodizing color matching, burr-free edge requirements, and packaging designed for kitted delivery to the assembly line. Customers consolidating molded and machined components with one supplier remove a full layer of incoming inspection and supplier management from their own operation.
## Frequently Asked Questions About custom cnc parts
What tolerances can you hold? General machining is +/-0.05 mm; precision features on small parts reach +/-0.01 mm; ground surfaces hold tighter still with a defined Ra requirement. We will tell you the tolerance class we can guarantee for your specific geometry rather than quoting a number we cannot inspect.
What is the minimum order quantity? One piece. Prototypes and replacement parts are a normal part of our workload, and pricing is quoted per drawing without a tooling charge.
Which materials do you machine most often? Aluminum 6061 and 7075, stainless 303 and 304, 4140 and P20 tool steels, brass, copper, POM, PEEK, and PC. Titanium and Inconel are available for demanding applications with longer lead times.
Which file formats do you need for a quote? STEP, IGES, or native CAD, plus a 2D drawing for tolerances, datums, finishes, and inspection requirements. If no drawing exists, we can quote from the model and note the standard tolerances we will apply.
How fast can I get parts? Simple aluminum parts ship in three to five working days. Complex 5-axis work with finishing typically takes seven to twelve working days. Expedite service is available.
Can you support both machining and molding from one purchase order? Yes. That is the point of working with P&M: metal and plastic custom cnc parts, mold inserts, and molded production parts delivered against one schedule and one quality system.
## Conclusion
custom cnc parts remain the fastest and most flexible way to convert a design intent into a functional part, and they stay competitive far beyond the prototype stage when the quantity does not justify a mold. The risk is never the concept. The risk is a supplier who quotes loosely, machines without a plan, and ships parts with no inspection record. P&M removes that risk by combining 3-axis and 5-axis milling, turning, EDM, and grinding with in-house molding, disciplined validation, and documentation that stands up to an audit. Send us a STEP file, a drawing, and a quantity, and we will return a manufacturability review, a tolerance assessment, and a firm quotation for your custom cnc parts.
