Product Description

Custom Laser Engraved Parts are molded or machined components whose surfaces carry a permanent mark burned into the material by a focused laser beam. Instead of relying on a printed label, a pad-printed logo or an adhesive sticker, the mark becomes part of the product itself. P&M has spent 18 years building molds and 10 years exporting them, and in that time laser marking has moved from a decorative extra to a core expectation of overseas buyers who need instant brand recognition and traceability. The process works on two levels. For molded plastic parts, we machine a laser-textured or engraved insert and fit it into the mold cavity, so the engraving is transferred to every shot without any extra operation. For metal components produced by our die-casting and CNC departments, the laser writes directly onto the finished surface after machining. Because the beam removes or carbonises a thin layer of material, the resulting mark has real depth rather than sitting on top of the surface, which is exactly why Custom Laser Engraved Parts survive abrasion, solvents, UV exposure and repeated handling far better than any printed alternative. Contrast is controlled by laser power, frequency and focus, giving us either a crisp light-on-dark effect on dark plastics or a dark-etched effect on light metals. Depth is controlled in the same way, so a shallow cosmetic mark for a logo and a deeper mark for a grip texture can both be produced on the same part. The choice between marking in the mold and marking after molding depends on volume and variability, and both routes are available under one roof. That flexibility matters when artwork is still being finalised while tooling has already started.

P&M Custom Laser Engraved Parts Molding Introduction

Laser engraving and laser marking cover a family of related techniques. Laser etching removes a controlled amount of material to create contrast and a small amount of relief, laser marking changes the surface without deep removal, and laser texturing creates the fine, repetitive patterns used for grip surfaces and decorative finishes. On molded plastic parts, logos, brand marks, serial numbers, part codes and measurement scales can all be produced. A measurement scale is a good illustration: a ruler-like array of ticks, numbers and symbols must be dimensionally accurate across the whole part, and producing it in the mold guarantees that accuracy on every single shot instead of on one printed label.

Two production routes serve different needs. The first is in-mold marking, where a laser-textured or engraved mold insert carries the marking permanently. Our engineers create these inserts in house using the company's carving and EDM capability, which means the fine detail of a logo or a scale is cut directly into hardened steel rather than outsourced. Once the insert sits in the cavity, every molded part carries the marking automatically, with no added cycle time, no consumables and no risk of a misplaced label. The second route is marking after molding, which is used when serialisation or traceability demands unique data on each unit, such as a one-per-part identification number for industrial or medical products.

Durability is where laser work separates itself from printing. A pad-printed logo can be rubbed away by a fingernail, dissolved by alcohol-based cleaners or faded by sunlight. A laser-etched mark on the same plastic sits below the surrounding surface and is therefore protected by the material itself; on engineered plastics it remains legible after years of service. Laser-etched marks also resist the aggressive cleaning agents specified for medical and laboratory devices, and they do not add an adhesive layer that could peel, harbour dirt or fail a flammability or cleanliness specification. For promotional items and consumer goods, the same process provides a premium, scratch-resistant finish that looks like part of the design rather than an afterthought.

Because marking is integrated into the manufacturing chain, the buyer does not have to coordinate a separate marking supplier, ship parts between sites or accept inconsistent appearance between batches. The marking requirement is treated as a design input at the tooling stage, verified on a pre-production sample, and then locked into the mold for its whole working life. That is why P&M can offer Custom Laser Engraved Parts as a routine capability rather than a special project, and why the same team that designs the part also controls the marking it carries.

Contrast and depth are the two variables buyers ask about most often, and both are engineering decisions rather than guesswork. On a dark ABS or polycarbonate housing, a light, frosted mark gives the strongest visual contrast without weakening the wall section. On a light-coloured or translucent part, a darker etched mark reads better and hides fingerprints. Where a grip texture is required, the laser cuts a shallow, repeating pattern into the mold insert so the texture appears as a moulded feature of the part rather than a coating that could wear smooth. Because the depth is set by the tool, it repeats identically across a multi-cavity mold and across successive production runs, which is important when a buyer orders repeat batches months apart.

Tooling also determines how fine the mark can go. Small text, thin logo strokes and tight scale divisions all depend on the sharpness of the insert and the accuracy of the cavity, and this is where the company's in-house carving, EDM and wire-cutting capability becomes a practical advantage. If a buyer later changes a part code or adds a warning symbol, the insert can be reworked or replaced without rebuilding the whole mold, and moulded samples are supplied for approval before the marking is locked in. This approach keeps the visual identity of the product consistent from the first sample to the last shipment and removes the batch-to-batch variation that buyers often experience when marking is handled by a separate supplier.

P&M Custom Laser Engraved Parts Molding Feature And Application

The technical foundation of Custom Laser Engraved Parts starts with tooling precision. Our molds are built to a tolerance of plus or minus 0.1 millimetres, which is what allows fine text, tight scale divisions and thin logo strokes to come out cleanly on every cavity. Mold life runs from 50 to 100 million shots, so a marking engraved into the insert keeps producing identical results for the entire production life of the project, with no drift in depth or contrast. We work with P20, 2738, 2344, 718, S136, 8407, NAK80, SKD61 and H13 tool steels, and build to HASCO, DME or customer-specific standards. Molds can be single cavity, multi-cavity, or configured to run different products from the same tool, with hot runner or cold runner systems as the application requires, and we use CAD, PRO-E and UG for design work, typically completing the design stage in one to three days. Core technology includes milling, grinding, CNC, EDM, wire cutting, carving, lathes and surface finishing.

Lead time is one of the clearest advantages for buyers. Mold lead time is about 25 working days, and production time for molded parts is 7 to 15 days. Because the marking is built into the tool, there is no separate marking lead time to add. Quality control supports this: we produce a pre-production sample before mass production so the buyer can approve the exact mark, depth and contrast, and we carry out a final inspection before shipment. Samples are guaranteed to be the same quality as mass production, so what is approved is what is shipped. Products are molded from food-grade plastic raw materials, and the same one-stop chain that makes the part also finishes it: 3D design, 3D printing, mold making, plastic injection, product assembly, surface printing and spraying.

Applications follow directly from these properties. Branded consumer products use laser-etched logos on housings, lids and handles to gain a durable premium look. Promotional items such as drinkware, containers and corporate gifts use in-mold marking for a mark that will not wash off. Industrial identification and traceability rely on part codes, batch numbers and serial numbers marked after molding so that every unit can be traced through the supply chain. Medical and laboratory devices require legible, cleanable, chemically resistant markings that survive repeated disinfection. Automotive interior components use engraved textures, symbols and scale markings on trim, control panels and knobs, where the mark must match the surface finish exactly and never peel. In each case, the mark is not decoration applied at the end of the process; it is engineered into the part.

Metal work complements the plastic side. Our die-casting, rotational molding and CNC machining capabilities allow us to laser-mark machined metal housings, brackets and inserts for buyers who need plastic and metal components from a single supplier.
