Goggles are typically made from highly transparent, impact-resistant plastics (such as polycarbonate (PC)). The production process demands high precision and cleanliness to ensure the final product possesses excellent optical properties and protective properties.
The entire process can be divided into three main stages: pre-molding preparation, the injection molding cycle, and post-processing and inspection.
Stage 1: Pre-molding Preparation
This is the foundation for ensuring product quality. If the raw materials are not handled properly, even the most impeccable subsequent processing will not result in a qualified product.
Raw Material Selection and Pre-treatment:
Material: Polycarbonate (PC) is the most commonly used due to its extremely high impact strength, high light transmittance, heat resistance, and good dimensional stability.
Drying: PC resin is hygroscopic and absorbs moisture from the air during storage and transportation. Moisture-containing particles undergo hydrolysis during high-temperature injection molding, leading to molecular chain breakage and defects such as silver streaks, bubbles, and reduced strength. Therefore, prior to injection molding, the pellets must be thoroughly dried in a hopper dryer at a specific temperature (e.g., 120°C) (usually for at least 2-4 hours).
Mold Preparation:
Mold Design: Goggle molds typically consist of a lens mold and a frame mold (or a single unit if the goggle is a one-piece design). The cavity surface requires high-precision polishing, even to a mirror finish, to ensure a smooth and transparent product.
Installation and Commissioning: The mold is installed on the injection molding machine and commissioned to ensure the proper functioning of the ejection system, cooling water circuits, runners, and other components.
Surface Cleaning: Before closing the mold, the mold cavity surface must be thoroughly cleaned with a dust-free cloth or a dedicated cleaning agent. Any oil or dust will cause product defects.
Phase Two: Injection Molding Cycle (Core Process)
This is a repetitive, automated cycle, each consisting of the following steps:
1. Mold Closing and Locking
The movable and fixed mold sections of the injection molding machine are tightly closed under high pressure, forming a sealed cavity to withstand the immense melt pressure during injection.
2. Injection and Holding Pressure
Injection: The screw advances through the barrel, injecting the already plasticized, high-temperature, viscous plastic melt into the mold cavity at high speed and high pressure.
Holding Pressure: After the cavity is filled, the screw continues to maintain a certain pressure (holding pressure) to replenish the volume lost due to cooling and shrinkage of the melt. This prevents sink marks and dents in the product, which is crucial for ensuring product dimensional accuracy and surface quality.
3. Cooling and Plasticization
Cooling: The melt is cooled and shaped within the mold through a cooling water circulation system. The cooling time directly affects production efficiency and internal stress in the product. Too short a time will result in product deformation; too long a time will result in low efficiency.
Plasticization: During the cooling process, the screw, driven by a motor, rotates, conveying, compressing, shearing, and heating the plastic pellets from the hopper, evenly melting and plasticizing them and preparing them for the next injection.
4. Mold Opening and Ejection
After cooling is complete, the mold opens, and the injection molding machine's ejector mechanism (ejector pins, ejector plate) ejects the cooled and solidified goggles from the mold cavity.
A robotic arm or robot typically automatically reaches in, picks up the product, and places it on a conveyor or designated container, enabling automated production.
Stage 3: Post-Processing and Inspection
The goggles, fresh from the mold, are only semi-finished products and require a series of processing steps to become qualified products.
Sprue Removal: Cut or punch out the waste material (called sprue material) connecting the main and branch runners to the product.
Post-Processing (Annealing): For PC goggles, internal stress is generated during the injection molding process. To eliminate this stress and improve the product's dimensional stability and resistance to environmental stress cracking, the product is typically annealed in an oven (e.g., at 110-120°C for 1-2 hours, followed by slow cooling).
Surface Treatment (Optional):
Hard Coating: The PC surface is relatively easy to scratch. High-end goggles often feature a hardened, wear-resistant coating to increase their scratch resistance.
Anti-fog coating: To prevent fogging and obstructing vision, the inner surface of the lens is sprayed or soaked in an anti-fog solution, creating a hydrophilic anti-fog film.
UV protection: UV absorbers are added to the raw materials or coated on the surface to block UV rays.
Assembly: The lenses, frames (if produced separately), headband, sealing sponge, and other components are assembled together.
Full inspection and packaging:
Full inspection: This is a crucial step. Inspection includes:
Appearance inspection: Checks for defects such as shrinkage, silver streaks, bubbles, black spots, scratches, and stains.
Dimensional inspection: Calipers, projectors, and other tools are used to verify that key dimensions are within tolerance.
Performance testing: Impact tests (such as a steel ball drop test), light transmittance tests, haze tests, and weather resistance tests are performed.
Packaging: After passing inspection, individually wrap the parts in soft materials such as PE bags or bubble wrap to prevent scratching, then pack them into cartons.
Key Process Parameters and Quality Control Points
Temperature: Barrel temperature, nozzle temperature, and mold temperature (significantly impacts product internal stress and surface finish).
Pressure: Injection pressure and holding pressure.
Speed: Injection speed.
Time: Injection time, holding time, and cooling time.
Environment: The injection molding workshop should ideally maintain dust-free standards, especially when producing goggles with high optical requirements, where dust is a natural enemy.

A: Mold Payment: 40% deposit by T/T in advance, 30% second mold payment before sending out the first trial samples, 30% mold balance after you agree the final samples.
