Metal insert injection molding (commonly known as "insert injection molding") is a "plastic metal integration" process that precisely fixes prefabricated metal inserts (such as nuts, bolts, terminals) in a mold, and then injects molten plastic to wrap them, ultimately forming a "metal reinforced, plastic molded" composite product. Metal insert injection molding refers to the injection molding process that uses prefabricated metal inserts (such as brass nuts, stainless steel bolts, copper terminals, etc., which need to be processed into specific shapes in advance) and thermoplastic materials (such as PA, POM, ABS, etc.) as raw materials, and through the process of "insert positioning → mold clamping → plastic injection → cold curing → product demolding", firmly combines metal inserts with plastic. Pre preparation directly affects the quality of subsequent molding, and special attention should be paid to the processing of inserts and the accuracy of molds.
Pre treatment of metal inserts:
Cleaning and degreasing: Metal inserts may have residual oil stains and iron filings during processing, which need to be thoroughly cleaned by ultrasonic cleaning (using neutral degreasing agent, temperature 50-60 ℃, time 5-10 minutes) or solvent wiping (such as alcohol) to avoid oil stains affecting the bonding between plastic and metal (oil stains can cause bubbles and delamination on the bonding surface);
Surface treatment (as needed): Based on the type of plastic and the requirements of the working conditions, surface treatment is carried out on the inserts, such as nickel plating on brass inserts (to improve corrosion resistance and bonding strength), passivation of stainless steel inserts (oxidation prevention), and galvanizing of iron inserts (rust prevention). After treatment, it is necessary to ensure that the surface is free of impurities and the roughness meets the standard;
Size screening: Use calipers or automated screening equipment to check the size of the insert (such as nut inner diameter, terminal thickness), remove out of tolerance products (size tolerance should be controlled within ± 0.03mm), and avoid positioning failure caused by inaccurate insert size;
