Injection molding is a plastic manufacturing process that injects molten plastic material into a mold and then cools and solidifies it.
1. Working principle
Filling the mold: Molten plastic material is injected into the mold through an injection machine, and the injection machine applies high pressure to make the plastic flow and fill the mold cavity.
Cooling and solidification: The plastic material in the mold is cooled to solidify and form. The cooling time and temperature depend on the type and thickness of the material, etc., and the mold design will also affect it.
Mold opening and removal: After cooling and solidification, the mold is opened and the molded part is taken out. There is a release agent on the mold to assist demolding.
Deburring, trimming and processing: After taking out the molded part, remove excess plastic material and burrs, and perform trimming and processing, which can be done manually or by machine.
Inspection and packaging: Finally, inspect the quality of the finished product, and package and transport it after passing the inspection.
2. Seven process flows
Mold preparation: Design, manufacture and install molds for manufacturing plastic products in advance. The design should consider the shape, size and material properties of the product, and the manufacturing should consider the mold material and processing accuracy.
Plastic material preparation: Select and process plastic materials according to product requirements, heat plastic particles or powder to a molten state and then inject them into the mold.
Injection: The molten plastic is injected into the mold through the injection machine. The pressure, speed and temperature of the injection machine must be controlled to ensure the injection accuracy and quality.
Cooling: After injection molding, wait for the plastic to fully cool and solidify.
Mold opening: After cooling, open the mold to take out the injection molded parts. The mold opening methods include manual, mechanical and hydraulic.
Deslagging, trimming and processing: After taking out the injection molded parts, deslagging, trimming and processing are carried out to remove excess materials, flatten the surface and process holes.
Inspection and packaging: After the finished product quality meets the requirements, it is packaged and transported.
Injection molding is the core technology of plastic product production. Its key points involve the fine coordination of multiple links such as materials, equipment, processes, molds and quality control. The following are the five core points and operation details of the system:
1. Material selection and pretreatment
Plastic property matching
Select the resin type (such as PP, ABS, PC) according to the product function (such as strength, transparency, temperature resistance), and consider parameters such as melt index (MFI), shrinkage (such as ABS shrinkage 0.5-0.7%), and thermal stability.
Case: Automotive parts require high-temperature resistant glass fiber reinforced nylon (PA+GF), while medical devices require medical grade PP or PC.
Key steps of pretreatment
Raw material drying: Hygroscopic materials (such as PC need to be dried at 120℃ for 4 hours) must strictly control water (water content <0.02%), otherwise it will cause bubbles/silver streaks.
Masterbatch mixing: The ratio error must be <±0.5% to avoid color difference or uneven dispersion.
2. Mold design and maintenance
Runner system optimization
Gate design: Point gate (diameter 0.8-1.5mm) is suitable for small parts, fan-shaped gate is used for thin-walled parts to reduce shear stress.
Cooling water channel layout: follow the principle of "conformal cooling", keep the distance from the cavity 10-15mm, and the temperature difference needs to be <5℃ to prevent warping.
Venting and demoulding
The depth of the venting groove is 0.02-0.04mm (less than the plastic overflow value) to avoid trapped air and burning.
Demolding slope design: ABS parts are recommended to be 1-1.5°, and deep cavity parts need to be increased to 2-3°.
3. Key points of injection molding equipment operation
Clamping system calibration
Clamping force (Tonnage) calculation: Projected area (cm²) × material pressure (generally 300-500kgf/cm²), and a 20% safety margin is required.
For example, the maximum production projected area of 2000T injection molding machine is about 4000cm² PP products.
Screw selection and maintenance
Screw L/D ratio ≥ 20:1, compression ratio 2-3 (PVC uses low shear screw, PC requires barrier screw).
Regularly check screw wear (gap > 0.2mm needs to be replaced) to avoid uneven plasticization.
