The injection molding process for plastic spoons is a typical one that strives for extreme efficiency and low cost. Although its structure is simple, its high production volume places extremely high demands on production speed, energy consumption, and raw material costs.


The following is a detailed process for plastic spoon injection molding, highlighting its large-scale, fully automated production.


Plastic Spoon Injection Molding Process


Phase 1: Raw Material Preparation

Material Selection:


Polypropylene (PP): The most commonly used material. It is non-toxic and odorless, meets FDA food contact standards, has good toughness, and is inexpensive.


Polystyrene (PS): It has a harder, more brittle texture and high transparency, and is often used to make transparent spoons for yogurt cups.


Additives: Typically, only masterbatch is required to produce the desired color (white, black, red, etc.). The use of recycled materials is strictly prohibited; only food-grade virgin materials must be used.


Drying Treatment:


PP and PS do not absorb much water, but in large-scale production, a brief drying step (e.g., 1-2 hours at 80°C) is often performed to ensure optimal performance and prevent trace moisture from causing surface air marks.


Phase Two: Mold Design and Features


Spoon molds are a prime example of high-efficiency, high-cavity molds.


High-Cavity Molds:


A mold typically has 32, 64, 128, or even more cavities. This is key to reducing the cost per part.


The cavity layout requires rheological analysis to ensure that each cavity is filled simultaneously and evenly with plastic.


Hot Runner System: This is an absolute standard feature.


A needle-valve hot nozzle precisely controls the opening and closing of each feed point.


Advantages: No waste (no handle), saving material; shortened molding cycles; and fully automated production.


Cooling System:


The design must be extremely efficient. The spoon's thin body allows for rapid cooling and extremely short cycle times. Uniform cooling water flow is key to ensuring consistent dimensions and deformation across all spoons.


Exhaust System:


Micro-exhaust slots are located at the end of the cavity to prevent trapped air and burns (yellow lines or black spots appearing on parts of the spoon).


Ejector System:


Due to the spoon's unique shape, round or flat ejector pins are typically placed on non-critical surfaces or the bottom of the handle to achieve automatic ejection and removal.


Stage 3: Injection Molding Process


This is the core step in achieving high-speed production, with cycle times measured in seconds.


Fully Automatic Loading: Dried plastic pellets are automatically drawn into the injection molding machine's hopper via a central feeding system.


Injection Molding Stage:


High-Speed Injection: The screw injects molten plastic into the mold at extremely high speeds. This ensures that all cavities are filled as quickly as possible, preventing material cooling at the front end and resulting in material shortages.


Low Holding Pressure: Because the spoons are very thin and shrinkage is limited, only very low holding pressure and time are required, primarily to prevent flash (burrs).


Cooling and Mold Opening:


Extremely Short Cooling: The spoons cool very quickly, typically only a few seconds.


Automated Mold Opening: After the mold is opened, a robot automatically enters and its gripper removes all spoons at once.


Mold Removal and Collection:


The robot moves the spoons to the side of the machine, where, through a specific vibration or air blowing method, they automatically drop into a collection bin or are directly conveyed to the packaging line. This entire process requires no human interaction.


Stage 4: Post-Processing & Quality Control

Post-Processing:


De-gating: Spoons produced with hot runner molds do not have sprue material, so this step is unnecessary.


Screening: A vibrating screen or air separation system is used to remove defective products that may be stuck together.


Quality Inspection:


Appearance Inspection: Workers regularly conduct spot checks to check for defects such as missing material, flash, discoloration, and contamination.


Dimensional Inspection: Use calipers to spot-check the consistency of key spoon dimensions.


Functional Inspection: Perform drop tests (to test toughness) and load tests (to test strength).


Packaging:


Use a fully automatic counting and packaging machine to pack spoons into plastic bags or cartons according to a specific quantity (e.g., 50 per bag) for packaging and storage.

A: Mold Payment: 40% deposit by T/T in advance, 30% second mold payment before sending out the first trial samples, 30% mold balance after you agree the final samples.

B:Production Payment: 50% deposit in advance, 50% before sending out the final goods.
